5th Gen 4Runner TRD Pro Style Grille Guide: Fitment, TSS & Raptor Lights
Share
A grille swap is one of the quickest ways to change the entire look of a 5th Gen Toyota 4Runner. The TRD Pro style - often called a heritage grille - replaces the factory emblem-heavy front end with the familiar block-letter TOYOTA design. It is simple, recognizable, and works just as well on a mostly stock daily driver as it does on a lifted trail build.
The part that causes confusion is fitment. A 2014 model does not use the same grille setup as a 2021. Toyota added Toyota Safety Sense-P to the 4Runner for the 2020 model year and revised the grille area to accommodate the factory radar sensor. Some 4Runner trims also use a different front fascia altogether. Here is what to check before ordering.

What is a TRD Pro style grille?
A TRD Pro style grille gives a standard 5th Gen 4Runner the heritage-inspired front-end appearance associated with the TRD Pro. Instead of paying OEM pricing, an aftermarket version delivers the same general look at a lower cost and usually gives you more choices for letter color and lighting.
The TD4R TRD Pro Style Grille for the 2014–2024 Toyota 4Runner is a high-quality replica rather than an OEM Toyota part. It is available with black, silver, or red TOYOTA lettering, plus optional amber or white grille lights.
2014–2019 vs. 2020–2024 4Runner grille fitment
There are two fitment groups for this grille:
- 2014–2019: Select this version for compatible pre-Toyota Safety Sense 5th Gen models.
- 2020–2024: Select this version for compatible models with clearance for the factory Toyota Safety Sense-P radar sensor.
The year split is important. Toyota revised the lower grille area for 2020 when Toyota Safety Sense-P became standard. This is not the Tacoma setup: the 5th Gen 4Runner does not use a separate Tacoma-style TSS garnish or require the sensor to be relocated for this grille. Choose the option that matches your model year.
Compatible trims
The TD4R grille is intended for the following 2014–2024 trims:
- SR5 and SR5 Premium
- Trail Special Edition
- TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium
- Venture
- TRD Pro
It does not fit Limited, Nightshade, or TRD Sport models. Those trims use a different front fascia, so the model year alone is not enough to confirm compatibility.

Will a TRD Pro style grille work with Toyota Safety Sense?
Yes—when you select the correct 2020–2024 version. On the 5th Gen 4Runner, the factory radar sensor stays in its original location; the newer grille version is shaped to provide the necessary clearance.
Do not order the 2014–2019 option for a 2020–2024 4Runner and assume it is interchangeable. No separate Tacoma-style garnish or sensor relocation is involved. After installation, confirm that everything is seated correctly and that no Toyota Safety Sense warning appears before normal driving.
Which TOYOTA letter color should you choose?
There is no universally “best” color; it depends on how much contrast you want.
- Black: The most understated choice. It works well with blackout emblems, dark wheels, and builds that already have a lot going on visually.
- Silver: The closest to the classic TRD Pro look and an easy choice if you want the TOYOTA lettering to be visible without adding another accent color.
- Red: The boldest option. It makes sense when the build already has red recovery points, TRD accents, or other small red details.
If you like the heritage look but do not want to replace the entire grille, the Universal Tri-Color Grille Badge is a smaller and less expensive front-end update that works with many factory and aftermarket grilles.
Should you add Raptor-style grille lights?
Grille lights are optional, and the cleaner choice depends on the build. The grille by itself keeps the front end simple. Adding lights creates more contrast at night and makes the new grille stand out more.
- Amber lights: The traditional choice and the easiest to coordinate with amber fog lights, ditch lights, or marker lighting.
- White lights: A cleaner match for white daytime running lights and cooler-toned headlight setups.
- No lights: Best if you prefer a factory-inspired look or already have enough lighting on the front of the 4Runner.

Is the grille upgrade worth it?
If your goal is a noticeable visual change without moving into bumpers, suspension, or major body work, it is one of the better places to start. The install is far less involved than many exterior upgrades, and the grille can be ordered to match the direction of the rest of the build.
It will not add performance, protection, or trail capability. This is primarily a styling modification—and that is fine. Not every upgrade needs to be functional. The value is in getting the front end you want without paying the price of a complete OEM TRD Pro conversion.
